Svensson supports Native Plant Pollinator Garden Planting Day at local high school

On April 15, 2016 Svensson participated in Native Plant Pollinator Garden Planting Day at West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"Planting" for the future
With April being National Garden month in the United States Svensson helped support the local Charlotte community assisting high school students with the planting of a native pollinator garden at West Mecklenburg High School. “Having the opportunity to teach so many of these students how to plant for the first time was an empowering opportunity for us” says Mauricio Manotas, President of Svensson’s American subsidiary.

Over 120 Charlotte area volunteers from the corporate community, rotary and garden clubs, along with neighborhood volunteers connected 60 schools with pollinators and outdoor learning.

Organized by the Green Teacher Network, a non-profit organization that strives to advance academics, health and sustainability through school gardens and outdoor learning, the Native Plant Pollinator Garden Planting Day allowed students to learn about planting a garden, the pollinator and bee protocol, and about worm castings.

Using the power of school gardens to reconnect kids to real food & natural ecosystems
Technology, processed foods and urban living have created barriers to the basic understanding of our food sources and outdoor ecosystems. Epidemics like childhood obesity and nature-deficit disorder are widespread. School gardens are a relevant, hands-on approach to addressing these challenges in today’s society. These challenges affect all children, but especially economically disadvantaged children.

Supporting an even bigger national call to action
The Native Plant Pollinator Garden Planting Day in Charlotte schools also supports the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge (MPGC) — a nationwide campaign to register and preserve a million public and private gardens and landscapes to help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across America.  Well recognized and supported by the horticulture industry, Svensson was proud to contribute to the challenge.
