Growers know that successful production is a matter of the right amount of inputs, but what’s less well-understood is that so many of these depend on achieving the right balance of light to start with.

Taken from our guide "The magic of getting light balance just right", here’s an 11-point list of what happens when the pendulum swings from too bright to too dark in a greenhouse.

In 2017, Rob Oosterom, co-owner of tomato nursery Lijntje in Moerkapelle, Netherlands researched possibilities and quotations for a new energy screen that had to be installed in his 2.5-hectare greenhouse. The existing screen had been in use for twelve years at that time. It was not flame retardant - which was the main reason for replacement - but otherwise, there was little to criticize.

In the greenhouses of Chiltepec, located in the states of Mexico and Veracruz, a wide variety of potted flowers are cultivated, including Anthuriums, Bromeliads, and a selection of Orchids. These greenhouses have been pioneers in Mexico using climate screens since 2001. Svensson's climate screens have become a fundamental tool for Chiltepec, allowing them to achieve a perfect balance between protecting their crops and ensuring the optimal development of their beautiful flowers.

In the soft fruit sector, climate screens are not yet as widely used as they are in vegetable cultivation. However, this sector is starting to consider utilizing climate screens in it’s applications, mostly because of high has prices. At Delphy ISFC in Horst, tests are being conducted to determine if the sustainable cultivation of strawberries - with intensive use of climate screens and vertical fans - can be done with half the gas. The initial results are promising.

Hacienda El Carmen Hotel & Spa, one of the most representative properties of the Valles region with more than 400 years of history, knows how to take advantage of its geographical location and the mild climate in the state of Jalisco for growing tomatoes and peppers. In 2017, a greenhouse was built with the objective of learning about specialized processes for greenhouse crops. To protect this greenhouse from the entry of insects and pests, mainly thrips, it was decided to install Svensson's climate solutions, creating an optimal climate for healthier plants, higher yields and a more productive working team.
